Visiting scribe winery in winter

We tasted several wines beginning with a crisp, zippy dry riesling. Scribe’s tasting room is not a tasting room at all, but just five picnic tables scattered outside the winery on a hill that overlooks their vineyards (simplicity save the flash for Napa). With this focus they create wines with ageability, structure and complexity.

Scribe doesn’t focus on trend or points, but on quality of fruit first along with simple wine making. (Their tastings are by appointment only.) I’ve been a fan of Scribe’s cabernet sauvignon from sip one, way, way back in 2013 when I started expanding my California palate. With such an early flight, and not being able to check into our Sonoma hotel until 3pm, what else was there to do but taste wine!īefore leaving Boston we made an appointment to visit with Scribe Winery. Chris thought I was purposely trying to get him motion sick. On August 11th we had a very early Air Alaska flight from Portland to San Francisco where we rented a Ford C hybrid with the most sensitive brake I’ve ever used. VISITING SCRIBE WINERY IN WINTER PRO

Pro tip: Most visits don’t include tours, but if you book an early morning tasting midweek, you might get the chance to explore the hacienda before the formal visit begins.Looking for something special this holiday season? Here's just a few of my favorite gift ideas. The Marianis espouse organic and biodynamic farming methods and non-interventionist winemaking techniques, which translates into distinct fruit-forward estate wines that rarely overpower. For an even more intimate experience, reserve seats for one of the many pop-up dinners pairing Scribe wines with multiple courses prepared by visiting chefs who come in for brief residencies. Reservations are only accepted by phone and often book out weeks in advance, especially in summer.

On sunny days, the tastings unfold on open-air patios in the shade of big white umbrellas when the weather is less than stellar, guests are greeted and served in one of the many rooms of the circa-1858 hacienda. Standard tastings run about 90 minutes and include four current-release wines paired with four food courses served family-style. This small-production and boutique winery near downtown Sonoma has achieved cult status in recent years for the exclusivity of the experiences that owners (and brothers) Andrew and Adam Mariani have put together.
